Technology
in Modern Business Environment |
 |
Ever
imagine conducting a business today without computers?
Literally everything is run by computers, and your company
surely relies on them for daily operations. Do you remember
(or can you image) performing accounting or payroll
by hand? Ever tried typing multi-carbon papers to document
shipments and receiving items? Computers have made our
lives and businesses run more efficiently. |

Implications
of Ignoring Your Technology |
While
remarkably durable and powerful, computers do require
periodic maintenance. Simple things, such as too many
temporary files, can cause a noticeable performance drain
on Windows-based computers. Not keeping track of certain
data file sizes can cause file corruption in some popular
office applications. For example, if your Microsoft Outlook
email file (typically stored as *.PST files) gets beyond
2 Gigabyte (Gb) in size, you run a risk of losing those
email files. |

Consider
this... |
|
If
you are not actively involved with the company's technology,
you might already be in trouble. Aside from the typical
issues mentioned above, many other - more serious threats,
are either lurking on your machine, or waiting to get
in. Viruses, Spyware, Ad-ware (including pop-up ads)
and other malicious scripts can either destroy or steal
your data. Other times, hackers use unprotected machines
(called Zombies appropriately enough) to help spread
viruses, Spyware or advertisements to other computers
without your knowledge or consent.
Not
using proper protection in your environment is simply
asking for the frustration associated with a virus
or hacker attack. Consider how much computer disruption
your company can tolerate, and act accordingly to protect
your investment. |

Legal
Implications |
Many
states, especially California (AB1950,
AB2787, AB2892, AB1436, AB1457 and AB1530), are working on, or have
implemented, new codes sections, dealing with privacy
protection. If you store any sensitive client data
on your servers, new requirements may mandate that
you take steps to protect client electronic data.
Additionally,
many states are implementing anti-spam legislation.
If your machine has become a Zombie (see Consider
This section above) or has otherwise been compromised, then
your network might be breaking the law. |

Protect
Yourself - Adopt a Maintenance & Security Posture |
Keeping your computers and network finely tuned is neither expensive or
time-consuming - assuming you've attempted to stay on top of the situation. Imagine
running your car without regular (or any) oil changes? Try printing
something with an empty printer cartridge - you get the idea. When it
comes to justifying technology maintenance, remember, it doesn't cost - it
pays!
Even
if you don't use TG & Associates to help you maintain
your network -
use someone! |
